Photosynthetic characteristics, specific leaf mass, chlorophyll and total leaf nitrogen concentrations of four herbaceous plants (Dicranopteris linearis, Hanguana malayana, Pentaphragma ellipticum, Tacca integrifolia) from nutrient-poor tropical forests showed that all these plants were well-adapted to their natural growth environments. No photoinhibition was observed even in the understorey plants. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Seventeen herb, shrub and tree species of commercial and ecological importance in southern Africa were exposed at one location to ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-315 nm) radiation approx. 35 % above clear-sky background (control). The aims were to assess how UV-B affects canopy area, dry mass, and some biochemical and morphological properties of leaves, and to investigate whether differences between species are related to growth form of the plants. There was no pattern of response to UV-B related to growth form. Leaves of trees had altered chlorophyll a and b, carotenoid and flavonoid concentrations, but those of shrubs or herbs did not. Non-structural carbohydrates were unaffected. Smaller canopy areas and dry masses were observed under enhanced UV-B, but these were not statistically different among growth forms. There was a general insensitivity of species to elevated UV-B. Only five species had significantly altered leaf biochemical and morphological properties, canopy area and dry mass, the changes differing in magnitude. There was no consistent pattern of change in leaf thickness or biochemical composition with increased UV-B. Correlation analyses did not support the view that growth is less negatively affected in species with thick leaves or in those where leaf thickness increases, or in species with naturally high leaf flavonoid contents or that are able to synthesize additional flavonoids in response to UV-B enhancement. The analyses did not support the hypothesis that growth was inhibited by starch accumulation in leaves under elevated UV-B. However, changes in leaf shape did correlate with canopy area and dry mass, showing the importance of photomorphogenetic changes caused by UV-B which affect species' performance. We conclude that generalizations on plant sensitivity to UV-B based on growth form and functional type could be misleading, and that the great majority of economically important species of the region are likely to be insensitive to future UV-B increases. Notable exceptions include the Colophospermum mopane tree ecotypes chota and leslie and the arable annual Vigna unguiculata, both of which are traditional sources of livelihood to rural African populations and of importance to African industry and agriculture.  相似文献

Haplogloia andersonii (Farlow) Levring is an anti-tropical species that occurs on cold and warm-temperate Pacific coasts of both Americas. In its habit it resembles the subantarctic species Chordaria linearis (Hooker et Harvey) Cotton. Culture studies show that the species differ in morphology and ecophysiology of their microscopic gametophytes and in gamete behavior. Details of sporophyte anatomy are presented that also allow the distinction of field plants. In South America, H. andersonii occurs only on the Pacific coast, from central Perú (14°S) to southern Chile (50°S). Chordaria linearis occurs on the Pacific coast from Chiloé Island (43°S) to Cape Horn (56°S). In the shared area the species may co-occur. On the Atlantic coast, C. linearis was newly collected at a locality in northern Patagonia (41°S). In addition, C. linearis occurs in Antarctica. Haplogloia moniliformis Richer, recently described from Macquarie Island, is probably synonymous with Chordaria linearis.  相似文献

在吐鲁番、敦煌、民勤和天水4个地区进行了连续4年的沙漠葳[Chilopsis linearis(Cav.)Sweet]引种栽培试验,结果表明:沙漠葳是嗜热喜光的阳性树种,在吐鲁番生长表现良好,苗高、地茎、冠幅、主根长及侧根数等指标远高于其他试验区,苗高的年平均生长量可达2.26m,是其他3个试验区的3倍以上,2年生苗即可正常开花结实;在敦煌和民勤地区,沙漠葳能开花但种子不能成熟,植株生长量小,且受冬季低温和初春大气干旱的危害严重;在天水地区沙漠葳生长表现较好并能越冬存活,但不能正常开花结实。沙漠蒇的营养生长与年均温度和≥10℃有效积温呈显著正相关,相关系数分别达0.9868和0.9921,而与日照时数和相对湿度的相关性不显著。  相似文献

The clonal mat-forming fern, Dicranopteris linearis (N. L. Burm.) Underw., dominates vast areas of rainforests on the windward slopes of Mauna Loa Volcano on the island of Hawai'i. Because clone size has important ecological and evolutionary consequences in such a dominant species, we used isozyme analysis to investigate clone size and other aspects of genetic diversity and reproduction over a broad range of environmental conditions on primary successional sites (pahoehoe lava substrates). Isozyme analysis provided a measure of the upper limit of clonal size in this interdigitating clonal species. Each 0.5-ha primary successional site on Mauna Loa was comprised of a minimum of two to four clones. Genetic diversity in Dicranopteris was low; of 32 putative loci investigated, only 4 were polymorphic, with 2 or 3 alleles/locus. Over the 17 study locations on Mauna Loa and Kilauea Volcanoes, we identified nine multilocus genotypes based on unique combinations of allozymes. Seven of the nine genotypes were heterozygous for at least one locus, evidence of an intergametophytic mating system. Highly dispersible spores, coupled with intergametophytic mating should promote higher genetic diversity. We propose that the following factors contributed to low genetic diversity: founder effects; extreme isolation from mainland gene pools; high potential for mating among different gametophytes produced from the same sporophyte; relatively low numbers of safe sites for gametophyte establishment over space and time; and long-term reliance on vegetative growth. Leaf phenotypes were associated with genotype, but also with environmental conditions. Enough variability within a genotype existed to support the current treatment of Hawaiian Dicranopteris as one species. Vegetative growth was the primary means by which Dicranopteris covered the landscape. Nevertheless, spore production, gametophyte establishment, and sexual reproduction were absolutely essential for colonization of the few favorable microsites available on pahoehoe lava substrates of Mauna Loa following lava eruptions, dieback, and similar landscape-level disturbances.  相似文献

The potential of UV spectrophotometry and an aluminium chloride (AlCl(3)) colorimetric method to determine the dihydrochalcone (DHC) and mangiferin contents of green rooibos and honeybush (C. genistoides) extracts, respectively, was investigated. The DHC content of rooibos water extracts, determined using UV spectroscopy, correlated with the sum of the aspalathin and nothofagin contents as quantified using HPLC (r = 0.98). A correlation coefficient of 0.91 was obtained when correlating the mangiferin content of C. genistoides methanol extracts, determined by the AlCl(3) colorimetric method, with the results obtained by HPLC. Using the linear equations from the correlations it was possible to predict the DHC and mangiferin contents of extracts from the respective spectrophotometric measurements to a reasonable accuracy as an alternative to HPLC. The total polyphenol (TP) content of rooibos water extracts can also be determined using UV spectrophotometry and aspalathin as a standard (r = 0.99) as an alternative to the Folin-Ciocalteau method. The TP content of rooibos extracts correlated (r = 0.99) with its total antioxidant activity (TAA) as determined with the ABTS radical cation scavenging assay, but the TP content of C. genistoides water extracts is not a good indication of their TAA (r = 0.27). The aspalathin content of rooibos extracts correlated with their TAA (r = 0.96), but the mangiferin content of honeybush water extracts only gave a moderate correlation with their TAA (r = 0.75).  相似文献

Studies of laboratory cultures of Chordaria linearis (Hooker et Harvey) Cotton from southernmost South America revealed that this species has an obligate sexual life history in which a macroscopic sporophyte alternates with a monoecious microscopic gametophyte. Sexual reproduction is isogamous and under photoperiodic control. Gametes are produced only in short days, whereas in long days, asexual zoospores are formed that recycle the gametophyte generation. Unfused gametes develop into gametophytes, and sporophytes originate only from zygotes. Unlike other sexual members of the Chordariales, gametes of C. linearis have a reduced stigma and do not show phototaxis. They are released at the beginning of the night, not in the morning. In nature, C. linearis seems to be regularly infected by a dictyosiphonalean epiphyte resembling the rare arctic species Trachynema groenlandicum (Lund) Pedersen. The epiphyte is responsible for previous contradictory results obtained in laboratory cultures of C. linearis. This is the first record of Trachynema in the southern hemisphere.  相似文献

将从美国西部引进的2年生的沙生灌木沙漠葳(Chilopsis linearis)分别盆栽于含水量不同的土壤中,研究其生长及生物量的分配特征.结果表明,土壤水分胁迫严重限制了沙漠葳的营养生长和生殖生长,使单株叶片数、分枝数和侧根数显著下降,生物量大大降低,其中中度和重度胁迫下沙漠葳的干重分别比轻度胁迫降低40.9%和76.4%.重度土壤水分胁迫下沙漠葳的单叶干重、单叶面积和单位叶面积干重分别比轻度土壤水分胁迫降低63.45%、47.39%和27.23%,比叶面积和根茎比分别上升22.28%和86%.随土壤水分胁迫的加重,光合物质的积累从中下部叶片向中上部叶片转移.各构件生物量随土壤水分胁迫的加重而降低,其幅度大小为叶生物量>茎生物量>主根生物量>侧根生物量,反应了沙漠葳对土壤水分胁迫响应的整体行动.  相似文献
